A new study estimates that California's proposed high-speed rail system could bring $3 billion in direct economic benefits -- and possibly billions more -- to the Central Valley.
The study by University of California, Merced Professor Shawn Kantor is being released as voters decide whether to approve Proposition 1A, a November ballot measure that would authorize nearly $10 billion in bonds to start the project.
Kantor says the high-speed rail would save Central Valley residents time and money they would otherwise spend commuting to the San Francisco Bay area or Southern California.
He says the rail system also could lead to more construction work and boost the region's economy by making it easier for goods and workers to move around.
