Solider Caught On Film During Heroic Sacrifice
DUNNIGAN, Calif. (CBS13) ―
Chilling moments before a local soldier's sacrifice were captured inside the battle that killed him. The soldier is from Dunnigan and was just 19 years old. The stories from his surviving soldiers and video show he is nothing short of a hero.
Justin Casillas died in Afghanistan on the Fourth of July. The Fourth Brigade, 25th Infantry Division is the focus of a documentary from a group called Spartan Heroes.
At the soldiers' combat outpost in Southeastern Afghanistan are the unmistakable sounds of enemy fire.
Private First Class Justin Casillas manned a 60 millimeter mortar while firing rounds at enemy insurgents. Casillas saw shrapnel hit his friend and he didn't run for cover, instead he ran into the fire.
Soldiers say Casillas ran into enemy fire once, then again, and a final time all to save a life, which is when he lost his own.
A soldier killed during bravery on the battlefield; another casualty of war, but this time a local hero with video to prove his ultimate selfless sacrifice.
