16-Year-Old Arrested In Death Of Officer Vu Nguyen
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Officers say they've arrested a 16-year-old boy suspected of killing a Sacramento County sheriff's officer yesterday. Veteran detective Vu Nguyen was gunned down while chasing a man through backyards and over fences in south Sacramento. As many 100 officers aided in the manhunt.
Sacramento Sheriff John McGinness announced the arrest of the teen this morning.
He said police are confident they have the right person in custody, but declined to identify him because of his age.
But the sheriff did say the suspect was a high school drop-out and a member of an Asian gang.
Dozens of law enforcement officers worked through the night searching for the suspect. Sheriff McGinness says they detained and questioned several people and are confident in the arrest.
Nguyen and his partner, both assigned to gang duties, were in plain clothes when they made an unscheduled stop at a known gang house in the area of 47th Ave. and MLK Blvd. in Sacramento at 2 p.m. Wednesday. There, they saw a man who they have never seen before.
When they attempted to make contact with the man, he took off running and led officers on a chase through yards of nearby residences. The victim's partner says he was behind his partner in the area of 41st Ave. and 37th St., when he heard a gunshot and found his partner on the ground with a gunshot wound to his neck, gun drawn, say police.
The suspect had been described as an dark Asian male about 5'4" tall, 18-20 years old, weighing 130-140 pounds. And Sheriff McGinness says except for the age, the suspect fit the description. He even described him as being slight.
Nguyen was a 37-year-old, 7-year veteran of the force and had been working on the gang task force for three years. Nguyen was recently married.
