Sacramento Cathedral Plagued By Recent Robberies

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The main cathedral on K Street is open everyday from ten until six for people to come in and pray, but the problem is, sometimes no one is inside and that leaves it the target of thieves.

The cathedral is normally a place for prayer, reflection and worship. But, recently the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament has found itself the victim of crime.

"One of the tour bowls was taken," says Father Nicholas.

It is used as an incense burner in the church and it was allegedly stolen last week. It costs a couple of hundred dollars to replace.

"We have lost money; people have come in to steal our money boxes," says Father Nicholas.

And the Father also says they even tried to take the processional cross.

"It's unbelievable that people would come in and take it from us. You know a church of all places to come and steal," he says.

So, in response to the recent robberies, the church has started the 'Cathedral Guardian Program.'

"I want to be a part of this and it shouldn't be, you know it's a church and you don't in your right mind think, people would do this and then they do it," says Leonard Rojas.

The church needs at least 60 guardians, and the church is hoping that by CBS13 covering this tragic event some will come guard for God.

"Come and help us to guard this place, this is not just for us, Catholics, this is for the City of Sacramento," says Father Nicholas.

The concern truly is, if they don't get the guardians and if the items keep getting stolen, the cathedral will have to lock the doors during the day.
