SMUD Backs Out Of High-Voltage Power Plan
SACRAMENTO (AP) ―
The Sacramento Municipal Utility District is pulling out of a plan to build high-voltage power transmission lines from Lassen County to Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay area.
With 600 miles of lines, the $1.5 billion power project would be the largest in nearly two decades.
But SMUD officials say they don't feel the project is strong enough to invest a promised $13 million for planning. SMUD has spent only $2 million so far.
Fifteen municipal power providers back the venture, but it has drawn criticism from residents near the proposed lines.
Brendan Wonnacott, a spokesman for the Transmission Agency of Northern California, says the remaining groups involved will consider their next steps.
It's unclear whether the project can continue as planned without SMUD funding.
