Rockstar 21 has some clerks and customers confused.
CBS
It's sold in brightly colored cans. Rock Star is a well-known energy drink, but that same company is now selling a drink that if sold to kids, could get store clerks and owners in trouble.
The 6% alcohol content in the new Rock Star 21 came as a surprise to 19-year-old Michael Mapias. When he and his mother went to a local convenience store to buy a couple of Rock Star drinks, they were surprised at what they actually ended up with.
"I started drinking it and it tasted a little like beer," said Mapias.
The clerk that sold the boy the drinks said he didn't know they had alcohol in them.
So we checked places to find where Rockstar 21 is being displayed and found the drink placed alongside the alcoholic drinks. But some clerks who had the drink next to its non-alcoholic sibling, said they didn't know they were breaking the law.
Again, it's clearly marked on the can, but the company is so well-known for its energy drinks that it's easy to make the mistake. But for store clerks, the mistake could be a costly one. Last year, 1,600 clerks were arrested last year for selling beer to teens.
