Popular Chinese Candy Pulled From Local Stores
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
The state is warning that some candy could be contaminated with the same toxic chemical killing babies and making tens of thousands sick in China, has been found in products sold here in the U.S.
"They just showed up and told us it's been outlawed. To take it off the shelves," says one store owner.
White Rabbit Candy has been pulled off the shelves at local stores, including Oto's, earlier this week.
State officials are concerned that candy could contain Melamine.
"It's just like a candy with edible paper on it," says an official.
Now, lab results show some candies contain as much as 520 parts per million. That level is unacceptably high, and the California Department of Public Health is warning people not to eat any flavor of the popular Chinese candy.
"It's been around a long time. People know about it. Kind of sad they had to pull it," one store owner told CBS13.
The toxic chemical has been linked to contaminated infant formula and other milk products in China, where four babies have died and more than 53,000 others have been sickened.
The FDA is warning consumers not to drink a popular brand of imported instant coffee mixes.
