Car Slams Into Plane Taking Off From Freeway

NEEDLES (AP) ― The pilot of an experimental aircraft was taking off from a freeway where he'd made an emergency landing when a car slammed into the plane, ejecting and killing him, authorities said.

Three occupants in the car sustained minor injuries from a broken windshield, San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Jodi Miller said.

The Titan Tornado landed on the Interstate 40 connector road to Interstate 95 north, about 10 miles west of Needles in eastern San Bernardino County at 8:05 a.m. Tuesday.

Witnesses told the Federal Aviation Administration that the plane was taking off and was about 3 feet off the ground when the car slammed into it, spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Gregor described the plane as an experimental, homebuilt-type craft.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the incident, he said.
