Urban Chicken Owners Want To Legalize Hobby

They call their organization "CLUCK".

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Some Sacramento families are hiding illegal pets; they're chickens. But, some of these families want to bring urban chicken ownership into the open.

It's a different kind of chicken and egg debate.

"They're really easy to deal with," says Dave Crouch, a chicken owner.

Dave is no chicken. This Sacramento scofflaw goes on camera knowing his pets could be plucked if someone started hemming and hawing about the hens.

"We honestly didn't know we were breaking the law until after we had them," says Crouch.

By then it was too late. They already had name picked out for the pets: Bolina, Petunia, Nugget and Sweet Cheeks. Dave says his pets barely make a peep.

"I absolutely invite you to hang around," said Crouch. "We'll open up the coop and let them run around."

The hens fly the coop and rule the backyard roost. Crouch says the birds earn their keep by producing fresh eggs for the family and eating the backyard flies.

And that's where "CLUCK" comes in.

"It's the Campaign for the Legalization of Urban Chicken Keeping," said Crouch.

The group is bringing together law breakers like Crouch -- and there are a lot of them.

CLUCK has tripled in membership over the last few weeks. The group is hatching a plan to change the law and free everyone from the chicken coop closet.
