No Damage Reports After Large Humblodt Quake

More Local News
PETROLIA (AP) ― Humboldt County authorities say they've received no major damage reports a day after a magnitude-5.9 earthquake rattled the area -- and residents' nerves -- for the second time in a month.

Anthony Hooper, a county spokesman, says Wednesday's quake -- about 35 miles northwest of the community of Petrolia -- did not feel "significant." He says officials have not gotten any reports of structural damage.

The quake came less than a month after a magnitude-6.5 temblor rocked the area, causing more than $40 million in damage and one serious injury.

Eureka officials say an assessment of buildings affected by the Jan. 9 quake had turned up no new damage.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Geological Survey is still trying to determine if Wednesday's quake was an aftershock to the one on Jan. 9 or a separate event.
