Injured Climber Fell 40 Ft, Rescued From Mt Shasta

MOUNT SHASTA (AP) ― A Shasta County man has been airlifted off Mt. Shasta after falling down a 40-foot embankment and spending a cold night alone.

Siskiyou County authorities say Steve Buckland, 44, slipped on some ice and fell down an ice chute Sunday.

Buckland's climbing companions heard him call for help, but they were unable to find him. He was discovered Monday morning by a search and rescue crew. He had suffered a broken ankle.

Rescuers hoisted Buckland onto a California National Guard helicopter that took him to an awaiting ambulance.

He was treated and released from the hospital later Monday.
