Mayor Responds To City Council Endorsement Rumors

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― Two Sacramento city council members may be switching sides, turning against Mayor Fargo to back Kevin Johnson. Yesterday during CBS13 news at 6 p.m., R.E. Graswich reported this may happen. The formal announcement could come tomorrow, but the Mayor has something to say about it tonight.

It would be another big blow for the mayor. I talked to her an hour ago and it looks like city council member Steve Cohn will make it official, backing Johnson to become the next mayor of Sacramento. It looks like Sheedy might be on his tail doing the same thing but it looks like all of this would be news to the mayor.

"Well, it has been report to me by the media that Steve Cohn is going to be endorsing Kevin Johson tomorrow, and that's about as much as I know. And that Sandy Sheedy may be joining as well," said Mayor Heather Fargo. "I haven't talked to either one of them about it, so I don't."

When asked how she couldn't just pick up the phone and call, she replied: "I have called. I have called. No response."

When asked if that was disheartening, she replied: "No because I assume they are out to dinner of they turned their phones off for the night or whatever. We're going to be working together. And, you know, it's disappointing but these things happen in campaigns. Obviously after the campaign, I will continue to work with Steve Cohn on issues in midtown and East Sac."

To the question of if she lost the election, would she take a break, Mayor Fargo replied: "Um…maybe so. I'm not ready to do that. I'm not ready to stop taking care of the city and making the kind of changes I think we need to make."

Mayor Fargo talked to us after a fundraiser where, she said, there were three city council members in attendance. Two weren't there, council members Sheedy and Cohn. When she talks to them tomorrow her first question to them will be "why would you do this without talking to me first?"
