Marysville School District Cuts Summer School

MARYSVILLE, Calif. (CBS13) ― Budget cuts across the state have taken their toll on education. But now one district is making cuts outside of the regular school year and both students and teachers will be affected.

"Now I am actually on the straight end and I am trying to do what I need to do," says Artemio Ramirez.

After missing classes, what Artemio Ramirez needed to do was go to summer school.

"I might not have enough credits now because I can't go to summer school. It's bad," says Ramirez.

Summer school is now the latest program that has been slashed in the Marysville Joint Unified School District.

"The school supplies are down and there are textbooks in the library that are partially falling apart like at the seems and the bindings," says one Marysville teacher.

The district already cut $2.5 million from their operating costs this spring.

"We now have need to find three million additional dollars," say school officials.

That means as many as 750 11th graders who enrolled in summer school will be turned away. Just 60 will be able to attend, saving the district $325,000.

"We are starting at looking at seniors, those who will be becoming seniors this fall looking to see how we can help them first," school officials explain.

But with the clock ticking to graduation, a junior, Artemio worries he'll fall through the cracks.

"I don't have much time," says Ramirez.
