Li'l Smokey Released Back Into The Wild

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― A black bear rescued from a wildfire in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest is back in the wild.

The California Department of Fish and Game says it released the cub, nicknamed "Li'l Smokey," Thursday at a remote site in western Siskiyou County.

The male bear -- now approximately 11 months old -- was found severely dehydrated and burned in July in the forest west of Redding. Two of its claws were also either missing or severely damaged, and its mother was nowhere to be found.

It was taken to a rehabilitation center in South Lake Tahoe. The bear weighed about 8.5 pounds when it was found and is now 90 pounds.

Fish and game officials say it has been fitted with a radio transmitter that will allow its movements to be periodically monitored.
