Kevin Johnson: Shop Locally This Holiday Season
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
If you are going to shop this season, help your city by shopping locally for gifts. That's what Sacramento mayor-elect Kevin Johnson is asking for the holidays.
At six this morning, Sarah Jane was happily surprised. She opened to find her midtown boutique in Sacramento full.
"I wanted to show midtown that we could compete with the larger malls. It's absolutely plausible," says Sarah.
Trying to draw shoppers away from deep discounts at the malls this Black Friday, for the first time ever, Sarah opened early to slash her prices despite a drastic drop in sales.
"I am going to say we've got a drop in at least 50 percent of sales," explains Sarah.
Sonia Lucas, owner of the Mellow Me Out Day Spa, is also seeing fewer customers at her downtown location. But, she is hoping a new campaign called 'Shop Locally' will change that this holiday season.
"I think if we all pitch in and we all shop locally and business owner's support then we can get through this economy together," says Sonia.
Mayor-Elect Kevin Johnson claims spending locally could even ease the city deficit.
"It's going to make a big difference on our sales tax revenue and what that does as a city allows us to provide services and programs for our citizens in our community," says Johnson.
