Thousands of people are expected at a public memorial in Oregon on Friday for nine people who died in a helicopter crash while working at a wildfire in Northern California.
A pilot, a U.S. Forest Service employee and seven firefighters died after the helicopter went down in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest on Aug. 5. The aircraft had just lifted off for a trip back to their base camp. Four people escaped the wreckage with severe injuries.
Eight of the victims were from Oregon.
Gail Kimball, chief of the Forest Service, is expected to speak at the service, which begins at 10 a.m. at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. The tribute also will include a procession of the victims' families and as many as 30 fire vehicles representing firefighters from throughout the West.
