State Higher Ed. Leaders Denounce Budget Cuts

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― California's top higher education officials are warning that inadequate state funding is bleeding the quality from one of the world's most celebrated college and university systems.

The leaders of the University of California, California State University and California Community College systems teamed up Monday to warn that cuts in the governor's proposed budget would have dire consequences for higher education.

Together, the three systems have been told they can expect $1.2 billion less than they say they need for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

CSU Chancellor Charles Reed, UC Provost Rory Hume and Community College Chancellor Diane Woodruff are urging lawmakers to bring in more revenue through taxes or fees to offset the proposed cuts.

The governing boards for both CSU and UC also are considering raising student fees.

Reed says that rather than taking money from education, a better approach would be making deeper cuts to the state's prison budget.
