Birds Ruffle Feathers In Elk Grove Neighborhood
ELK GROVE (CBS13) ―
A local neighborhood is going to the birds. With so many vacant homes, it's a problem that can develop in any neighborhood. Birds are now taking over empty homes and bringing with them a lot of noise and mess.
Birds have taken over two vacant homes on Coop Drive in Elk Grove, turning what was a quiet neighborhood into a nightmare.
There is no delicate way to discuss the problem. Empty homes have turned into giant bird houses. They're resting on rooftops and apparently making their way inside through openings around the attic.
The homes are not in foreclosure, they are just vacant. But the flying creatures are making themselves at home creating a disgusting dilemma for neighbors.
"On a daily basis when it's just piles and piles, that's unacceptable," says Chris Hall, talking about the large amount of droppings. "I hose it off constantly. I don't want my children in it. It's not a safe situation. I think it's a health hazard."
Daily cleaning is the alternative to keeping Hall's children cooped up. The whole situation is understandably ruffling a few feathers.
"It's a shame we have to live next to something like this and pay the price," says Hall.
The city of Elk Grove is going to send out an inspector tomorrow morning to check out the problem. If the city has to clean up the droppings, the city says it will clean it up and stick homeowners with the bill. They also say, absent or not, homeowners who don't take care of the problem could face fines.
