Ban Lifted On Berkeley Sports Center Plans

A controversial plan to build a new sports center at the University of California, Berkeley is a step closer to reality.

A judge yesterday said her previous injunction blocking construction will dissolve in seven days. The decision gives campus officials a go-ahead to build.

In her ruling, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Barbara Miller also gave opponents time to appeal, something they promised will happen.

A spokesman for the university says school officials are "very pleased" with the decision.

The center has been the focus of an impassioned tree-sitting protest.

A spokesman for a group called Save the Oaks, says his group still hopes to stop the project by going to the Court of Appeals.
