Auburn Clock Tower Falls Victim To Vandals
AUBURN, Calif. (CBS13) ―
Last year, local business owners and community members raised about $15,000 to restore the Auburn clock. But, now someone is vandalizing the clock tower, sometimes daily, and that is making local merchants angry.
"Every morning we come here and check it," says Ben Asgharzadeh.
Daily, Ben walks from his jewelry store to the towering clock in Downtown Auburn.
"I love it," he says.
The clock is now becoming Ben's labor of love.
But vandals have been damaging the clock by moving time forward, damaging the motor and bending the hands.
"I think its teenagers, probably from the high school," says Ben.
"I repaired it, I was here until 10:30 last night," Ben tells CBS13.
That's why the former mechanical engineers stepped in, who repaired it for free, even after being targeted for his good deeds.
"They call, they give me some bad mouthing, but they hang up," says Ben.
But that doesn't make Ben give up from keeping up the clock tower.
Ben is now thinking about putting in surveillance cameras like the ones he has in his jewelry shop, or put in a Plexiglas cover there. This is all in hopes of stopping these vandals.
