The Scoop: K Street's Redevelopment Puzzle
R.E. Graswich
COMMENTARY (CBS13) ―
It's a small step, but an important step to anybody who cares about Sacramento. The city is moving forward with plans to tear up the K Street Mall and make room for cars and bicycles along this stretch of urban wasteland.
I've got to admit to some prejudice here - I came up with the idea for a new K Street and told Scoop viewers first, before city officials could weigh in.
But they liked it, and this week the city council decided to spend $175,000 in development money to study tearing up K Street. No general fund money is being used.
The study will show whether cars and bikes can improve the economic vitality of K Street. The survey will start here at Eighth and K

and 12th (whew, out of breath). The goal will be to create traffic - yes, traffic - because traffic means vitality.
It's been almost 50 years since cars were banned from K Street. This is one of those unusual cases where conventional wisdom works in reverse - the city needs congestion on K Street. It's a whole lot better than an empty street filled with broken dreams.
