Johnson Presents New Ideas Regarding Sports Arena
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Cal Expo looks like it won't be the new home for the Sacramento Kings, according to Mayor Kevin Johnson. The mayor has come up with a game plan to win a new sports arena.
You can all but add Cal Expo to the list of proposed homes for the Kings, now banished to the dungeon.
While the Cal Expo project has failed to move forward since its introduction, Mayor Johnson doesn't want to stand on the sidelines and just wait. He has laid out the rules of the game to move forward with another new stadium proposal.
First, Johnson says that the taxpayer comes first.
Second, while other cities have shown interest in taking the Kings from Sacramento, he says the city won't be used as leverage for another deal.
Third, Johnson says the city will negotiate on even terms by pursuing the best lawyers and consultants available.
Last, by initiating a task force with both public and private sectors represented, the city will think both inside and outside the box to move a stadium deal forward.
The mayor expects a proposal by the end of the NBA season, now eight months away.
