Preemie Born Weighing Under 1 Pound Goes Home

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. (CBS) ― A baby was born at Broward General Medical Center three months ago, weighing less than one pound, but thanks to great doctors and great parents, the little girl is now well enough to go home, reports CBS station WFOR-TV in Miami.

Haley Lynn's mom, Cassandra Plaur, initially went to Coral Springs Medical Center where tests revealed that the placenta was not getting enough blood. She was then transferred to the Chris Evert Children's Hospital. She had hoped to go home, but was instead told they had to deliver her baby via C-section.

"Very excited that we are going home," said Plaur at the Chris Evert Children's Hospital in Fort Lauderdale.

This trip is three months overdue for the Plaur family and for Haley Lynn, who was born early at 26 weeks, but being a preemie wasn't this infant's biggest problem.

"We have a lot of people praying for her," said Plaur.

It was her weight, or lack thereof, that was evident in snapshots taken at birth. The pictures showed the most signs of danger for Haley Lynn, who weighed less than a pound.

"She was a baby that for a lot of reasons wasn't growing very well inside the mother," said Eduardo Otero, M.D., medical director for the Hospital.

Doctors say she weighed half as much as other babies born at 26 weeks.

Haley Lynn spent three months under the constant care of nurses, doctors, and of course her parents, while inside incubators in the neonatal unit of the Children's Hospital.

"She is strong she is a fighter," said Plaur.

She sure is. Haley Lynn never had any of the expected complications. Now she weighs more than 4 lbs and has earned a nickname.

"Her little nickname is big girl, because she was really tiny," said Plaur.

And now this big girl is going home.
