Diabetics Can Travel With Extra Precautions
(CBS13)
Air travel can be a hassle for any passenger, but it's especially challenging for diabetics.
"Traveling has become much more complicated. So we have things with security, we have what you can carry on the plane, what you have to put in your suitcase," nurse Davida Kruger, author of the Diabetes Travel Guide said.
Kruger recommends never packing medication in checked luggage.
"You must carry your insulin on, you cannot put it in your suitcase because the temperatures in the cargo compartment, as well as if your suitcase is lost, you're in trouble," said Kruger.
Kruger says unlike other liquids, insulin does not need to pass through security in a quart size bag. Diabetics should carry a letter explaining their medical condition and the need for syringes, lancets and other equipment.
Carry a list of medications and back up prescriptions. Have a glucose tablet or hard candy on hand to treat low blood sugar. Planning ahead will help you care for your diabetes.
"If you're prepared then you're not going to get into trouble when you arrive," said Kruger.
13 million Americans have been diagnosed with diabetes and it's estimated another five million have it and haven't been diagnosed yet.
