New Medication May Help Foot Ulcers
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
It's something every diabetic has to look out for foot ulcers. The sores are often difficult to treat and can lead to serious problems. But, Doctor Mallika Marshall reports researchers are studying an experimental medication to get patients back on their feet faster.
Among diabetics it's a common problem that can lead to amputation. Joseph Fitzpatrick has developed large sores, called ulcers, on the bottom of his feet.
It's kept out of work for two months and stopped him from getting the exercise he needs.
"Not getting out and running, playing basketball, stuff like that, it's real hard for me," sys Joseph.
Poor circulation causes diabetics to lose feeling in their feet which can lead to the ulcers. The condition can also keep the sores from healing, putting patients at high risk of infection.
"Last year well over 100,000diabetics lost their limb, their lower limb due to diabetes," explains Dr. Vickie Driver, Boston Medical Center.
But there may be help on the horizon. Doctors are testing an experimental medication that was developed to heal foot ulcers faster.
It's a gel applied to the sores and works in a novel way. The DNA based medication delivers a gene into skin cells spurring the growth of tissue.
"We're hoping that we can help heal ulcers faster and that will allow us to prevent infections, deeper tissue loss, hospitalizations," says Joseph.
Joseph hopes the medication will get him back on his feet fulltime.
"I know they miss me at work. I hope to be back soon as possible," Joseph says.
If the gel works in Joseph and other patients being tested it could be on the market in two or three years.
