Staying Fit At 60: How To Still Look 30
If Actress Helen Mirren Can Do It, Why Can't You?
NEW YORK (CBS) ―
Academy Award-winning actress Helen Mirren turns 63 next week, and she has a lot to celebrate. Some recent paparazzi pictures of her in a bikini show she's stayed incredible sexy for being over 60.
So how does she do it?
Incredibly, Mirren says she hates to exercise and refuses to diet.
Still, after 30, our metabolism slows down and we lose bone density. Fitness expert Tanya Becker says it's key to build up muscle tone.
"Picking up 8-10 pound dumbbells are really going to help you get muscle tone to your arms. Push-ups are highly recommend, good old fashioned push-ups," she tells CBS station WCBS-TV in New York City.
Becker says everyone can do weight-bearing exercises at home, such as leg lifts and a simple one where you put your heels together, lift them off the floor and pulse down. It takes only 1 to 2 minutes several times a week, and believe us when we say it burns.
Mary DeLongis, who is also in her 60s, says she watches her diet and adds you've got to find something fun and go for it.
"In the summer I'll kayak or swim, I'll snorkel; and in the winter I like to snow shoe," she says.
Experts say when you first start exercising or changing your diet the biggest mistake they see is when you go overboard, so you quit. They say start slowly and make reasonable goals so you can stick with it.
