Local Breast Cancer Survivor Pans New Guidelines

More Local News
DAVIS, Calif. (CBS13) ― One local woman says she would be dead without early breast cancer detection.

"I just had my breasts removed and there really is not a whole lot of respect for that here. You know if these were my testicles I think I would've been able to spend a couple of nights here," said Ann Murray Paige, breast cancer survivor.

Ann is a woman who doesn't mince words and she's a breast cancer survivor who lifted the curtain on her agonizing journey in this film "The Breast Cancer Diaries."

Six years ago, Ann was fighting to stay alive.

Today, Ann is at her home in Davis fighting another battle and telling people new guidelines on mammograms and self-exams are bad advice.

"He felt the lump and he goes: 'ya you know what? I don't like that'," said Ann.

It was a lump Ann had felt during a self-exam at age 38.

A medical task force now says any woman should be checked for breast cancer..

"Again, where would I be if that had been the case?" said Ann.

Ann can answer her own question:

"I can tell you I wouldn't be here if I hadn't done what I did," said Ann. "They're trying to be scientific about something that's incredibly emotional, which is life and death."

She cringes at the thought that new guidelines might be profit-driven. After all, mammograms cost money.

"I don't know if it's based on profit margin," said Ann. "I sure as heck hope not."

And she sure as heck won't stop spreading the word:

"But if you've ever sat by the bedside of someone who's dying of cancer and your heart is bleeding for them I know you would have given anything to rewind that tape and to give them some kind of tool to figure out how they can avoid this death," said Ann.

Ann says the bottom line is to do self-exams. If you feel anything that you think shouldn't be there, find a doctor who's willing to go the extra mile to diagnose you properly.
