Good Question: Acne Outbreaks
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Few teens can avoid it: acne breakouts. But does eating junk food cause it? That's what I find out in tonight's Good Question.
We all heard it growing up, but according to dermatologist Seth Materasso, junk food is probably not the culprit behind your zits.
"Hate to disappoint all those mothers, but fast junk food doesn't cause acne," he says.
And neither does chocolate, according to the doctor. But if food-causing-acne is a myth, what's triggering the eruption?
"It's genetics," he says. "If your mom and dad got it, you'll probably get it. What's causing the outbreak? Unsightly noduals? It's genetics, stress, and hormones."
That combination of stress and hormones explains why so many teenagers break out. Dr. Materasso says home cures, such as drinking extra water, doesn't help at all, and over-the-counter medicines can be hit or miss.
His best advice is to have a doctor prescribe something specific for your skin type. It can be controlled.
"And fortunately, it comes and goes," he says.
