Good Question: The FBI's 10 Most Wanted List

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― There's a top 10 list you probably don't want to be on, but you may have wondered what gets you on it. Who qualifies for the FBI's Ten Most Wanted List?

You might call it the Wall of Shame at FBI headquarters in Sacramento. The FBI says agents at field offices all across the country send in their nominees. The final ten who are chosen have a criminal history, have committed particularly heinous crimes and are considered a continuing danger to society.

"In order to get there you have to be a really hideous criminal," says Mike Rayfield, a Special Agent with the FBI.

Agents also ask the question: Will national exposure help catch this guy? Though, Top 10 Lists have an international role as well.

"For example, this one speaks fluent French and has a Masters Degree in International Business!"

The rewards for information leading to arrests range from a minimum of $100,000 to Osama Bin Laden's $25 million. If you're captured, your picture comes down, but not everyone gets caught. Some have aged out and some cases have essentially timed out.

"Eugene Webb was on it for 25 years and finally, based on his age, they made the assumption he's deceased," says Agent Rayfield.

Eight women have made it onto the list.

Most importantly of all, does the list work? "Yes, in the history of the list, since 1950, there have been approximately 486 on the list and 457 have been captured."

150 of those "top tenners" have been turned in by alert citizens. There's a Sacramento guy on the list right now, and you can find more about him in the video player to the right.
