Good Question: Google Doodles
(CBS13)
Sometimes they replace letters with artwork called "Google Doodles." Well, today's good question: who's behind the Google's title artwork?
"We try to find Googly holidays - meaning kind of off the wall, fun, creative days," said Dennis Hwang, Google Webmaster.
Dennis Hwang is not only Google's webmaster, he's the original Google Doodler.
"I was an art major in college," said Dennis. "But my personal interest has always been in combining technology and art," he adds.
Dennis started as an intern at Google eight years ago, now he and colleagues meet every few months to choose some upcoming events for special treatment. He says there's no big secret to coming up with the design.
"It's a lot of just sweating about it and just walking around trying to think of fun, creative ways to depict the event using the logo," said Dennis.
Some holiday logos are only for international sites, like one for St. George's Day on Google UK or the festival of colors on Google India.
"Sometimes it takes hours -- most of the time, over days," said Dennis.
Dennis draws directly onto a computer tablet using a combination of art programs. His especially likes the doodles celebrating artists' birthdays. But don't ask him to pick a favorite.
"They're kind of like my children, so I like them all in some form or another," said Dennis.
