Movie critic Roger Ebert is going to resume writing reviews later this month, but he is not going to be back on his syndicated TV show.
In a letter being published in the Chicago Sun-Times today, the Pulitzer-prize winning writer says complications from surgery in January have left him unable to speak.
The co-host of the "Ebert & Roeper" program writes that he still has all his other abilities "including the love of viewing movies and writing about them." And he says he's looking forward to his annual film festival this month at the University of Illinois.
Ebert was has undergone several cancer surgeries in the past two years, one of which required the removal of his right lower jaw. He has since had to wear a bandage around his neck to keep his mouth from drooping.
"It was Schrader's line from his screenplay for Martin Scorsese's 'Raging Bull' that inspired my acceptance of my bandaged appearance: 'I ain't a pretty boy no more,'" Ebert wrote in his column.
He says he is now cancer-free and looking forward to his annual film festival, which begins April 23 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
