A tense 12 hour standoff with an armed Sacramento murder suspect ended in Fresno today when the suspect fatally shot himself. He was wanted in connection with the murder of a Sacramento woman and the severe beating of her long-time companion last night.
The standoff ended just before noon when Fresno SWAT officers were finally able to enter the apartment complex where the suspect, Ma Phompong, was holed up and found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Fresno police fired at least three rounds of tear gas into the home and sent in a remote-controlled robot before sending in officers who confirmed the suspect was dead.
Sacramento Police believe Phompong, 28, killed 61-year-old Anna McCaleb by shooting her in the head during a home invasion. Police later found her long-time companion, 59-year-old Bobby Johnson, in the garage severely beaten and found the couple's Toyota Tundra missing.
Everyone used to look out for the Johnson and McCaleb, according to Latoya McGee, neighbor. In fact, Phompong used to drink with Bobby.
Phompong was been living in McGee's garage, only three doors down from the murder scene, when the murder took place. McGee says he had been living with her since May when he was paroled from prison. He was the cousin of McGee's brother's girlfriend.
In 1998, Phompong was charged with attempted murder but plead guilty to the charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
Fresno police say the large caliber assault rifle that Phompong used to kill himself was stolen from the home invasion. They say Phompong has a criminal history and was on parole for assault with a deadly weapon during a previous home invasion. He is also a registered sex offender.
