Vallejo Dog Killed By Prowling Pit Bull
VALLEJO (CBS13) ―
A Vallejo man watched helplessly as the pit bull terrier mauled his Yorkshire terrier. Residents in the area fear that the dog could attack again.
All that's left to remind Maurice Bacelis of his little Yorshire terrier Moses, are some photos, a paw print and ashes. He says his dog was killed by a pit bull terrier that is still feared to be on the loose and could attack more dogs or even children.
Inside a box Maurice holds the cremated remains of his 12-year-old yorkie, "Moses," the victim of a brutal attack by a pit bull.
"He's home. It's hard," said Maurice. "He was a great dog -- the alpha dog."
On a recent Sunday morning, Maurice took out his dogs Moses and "Cassidy", his three-legged, black Labrador retriever for their daily walk in Vallejo. He says it didn't take long for their stroll to turn tragic.
"He just came, attacked and fought with Cassidy, tried to bite me and then he disappeared," said Maurice.
Animal control officers are stepping up patrols, looking for the large tan pit bull. They're especially concerned because it attacked another dog that same morning, shortly after the attack on Moses. They've followed up on several leads but haven't found the dog or its owner yet.
Officers believe the dog lives in the neighborhood, which isn't comforting to Maurice and his neighbors. They fear that the dog could attack again.
"It's very difficult. It's like seeing your child dying," said Maurice. "It's so terrible."
Cassidy suffered a few bite marks and is taking pain medication and antibiotics, but he should be fine. Meanwhile, animal control officers say if and when they find this pit bull, it will be quarantined for about 10 days. A judge will then determine if it's dangerous and should be put to sleep.
