The mother accused of drowning her daughter in a bathtub had filed for bankruptcy and divorce, alleging that her ex-husband beat her in front of her kids and threatened to kill her, according to court documents.
Anul Ram, 31, moved to the United States from Fiji after an arranged marriage to an Indian man, Dinesh Ram.
Court papers accuse Anul's ex-husband of physically and verbally abusing his wife starting the day they were married. Anul said she was "pushed, kicked and shoved" when she asked for a temporary restraining order in February of 2008.
A court mediator told the judge there were indeed incidents of domestic violence and that the kids would not be safe in the father's care. One of the kids even asked a deputy sheriff if he could come out to his home, "because dad hits my mom."
Anul told the court her kids witnessed the alleged abuse. The court documents said Dinesh "chased her with a fire poker," and "told my friend that he had purchased a gun and is going to kill me and all my friends."
The court mediator recommended that the father's contact with the children be suspended until he went to batterer's treatment. The husband denied the charges of abuse in the court papers.
Anul Ram was granted her temporary restraining order and was about to get a divorce, but the couple reconciled last September.
Anul is currently incarcerated in the Sacramento County Jail on murder charges.
CBS13 was unable to reach Dinesh Ram for comment.
