Suspect Uses Unusual Weapon In Attempted Robbery
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A rare robbery was caught on tape in North Sacramento. A convenience store clerk was attacked on the job.
"I ain't never seen anything like this. It's like dumb criminals you know," says Lamont Rogers.
Lamont Rogers is a hero. Surveillance video from the mini-mart shows a quick bear hug stopped an attack on his co-worker.
But, what happened moments before has regulars at the store riled up.
It begins with a suspect walking in. He waits for other customers to leave. After approaching the counter, he pulls out a bottle of lighter fluid and begins squirting the clerk, yelling at the cashier to give him $30.
"The suspect had the lighter fluid hidden in his pocket when he walked in. He picked up a lighter off the shelf. He opened the package, but wasn't able to figure out how to get the flame going," say police.
Off camera, the clerk, bobbing and weaving is trying to avoid the stream of flammable liquid.
"The boss said 'Lamont, Lamont,' so I rushed up in there," explains Lamont.
In a moment the attack ends, and the employees go after the would-be robber.
The get away car is also caught on surveillance camera outside.
"The suspect parked his car outside and the victim did a great job getting a description and partial plate," police said.
Police arrested a suspect a couple of hours later.
Police traced the car back to Richard Hamilton. He's a parolee who had a warrant out for his arrest. He is now accused of assault and attempted robbery.
