CHP Officer's Convicted Killer Talks To CBS13

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― One of the men convicted of killing CHP officer Andy Stevens talked to CBS13 tonight. And he says that that everything we've been told about the case is false.

Gregory Zielesch says he did not hire Brendt Volarvich as a hit man. In fact, Zielesch claims he was the original target.

"I had nothing to do with that officer's death," said Gregory.

Greg Zielesch denies killing CHP officer Andy Stevens. And although he didn't fire the fatal shot, he was convicted of first degree murder last month.

"I feel that I was taking advantage of…lied to…manipulated and ripped off," said Gregory.

During an earlier interview, Gregory was shaking and crying, he even told me that he ended up in this mess, because of a girl, a girl who was at one point his girlfriend, and she ended up becoming the girlfriend, of triggerman Brendt Volarvich.

Gregory claims it was that girl, who stole the gun from his house and gave it to Volarvich the night Andy Stevens was murdered.

He says he never gave Volarvich his gun. And, he says, he never hired Volarvich to kill his estranged wife's boyfriend. He claims it was all a made up story by his ex-girlfriend.

Gregory tells me, he barely knew Volarvich. In fact they only met two weeks before Andy Stevens murder, and the only time, they've spoken since that day, was right here at the courthouse on arraignment day.

That's when Gregory claims they were in the hallway together when Volarvich blurted out "I was on my way to kill you."

Zielesch says, that's when he realized Officer Stevens saved his life.

"What happened on November 17 was a senseless and tragic act. Officer Andy Stevens gave his life in the line of duty. And in doing so, he saved mine. He is a hero," said Gregory.

Now Zielesch did not take the stand in his own defense. When asked why not, he replied that his attorney's thought it would hurt his case rather than help him.

He will be sentenced later this month.
