Accused Killer Can Plead To Avoid Death Penalty
STOCKTON (AP) ―
A man whom authorities say strangled seven women throughout Central California is getting a chance to plead guilty to murders to avoid the death penalty.
San Joaquin County prosecutors say they will offer 70-year-old Roger Kibbe the deal at an Aug. 17 hearing.
Kibbe is accused of murdering five women in 1986 and one in 1977 along Interstate 5 in the Central Valley, giving him the nickname "I-5 Strangler."
Kibbe was charged last year while serving a life sentence for strangling a 17-year-old West Sacramento prostitute and leaving her body south of Lake Tahoe in 1987. He was a skydiver and traces of nylon rope were found on the teenager's body.
Investigators suspected him then of the other crimes, but it took decades to build the case against him.
