Call Kurtis: One-On-One With Kobe
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
A Sacramento college student won a contest to meet NBA star, Kobe Bryant.
When it appeared he wasn't going to get his prize, he called Kurtis and Kurtis called Kobe.
We told you about David Lopez in December.
He won a contest on the website Versussport.com but the contest organizers left him hanging, until we got involved.
"It was great, it was something I'd been wanting to do ever since I saw him play 13 years ago. It's a dream come true," says David Lopez, Sacramento resident.
It was a dream come true but it nearly became a nightmare for David.
Back in September, he entered a contest on Versussport.com. He had to make a video, showing he's Kobe's wildest fan.
David got a call, from the people running the website, saying he won!
"I was really excited. I've never met Kobe," says David.
Versus Sport promised to fly him to New York to meet Kobe but after half a dozen calls over two months, he didn't hear back.
"I kind of feel stupid about it, I was so happy, I went on my twitter, my facebook, myspace and all that, and I told everyone," says David.
We contacted Versus Sport but they didn't return our calls either.
After doing some digging, we found out someone else took over the website.
So we called the Lakers and Kobe Bryant's people, who promised to make good on David's prize.
"I was really happy and excited and relieved because Call Kurtis made it all happen," says David.
Two weeks ago, Kobe's people flew David out to Los Angeles, put him up in a hotel and got him his one on one with the superstar at a commercial shoot.
"He came up to me and said 'Hi,' gave me a high five and hand shake, I told him I'm a big fan," says David.
Kobe autographed David's towel and even gave him a pair of his new shoes.
"My dad already tried to buy them off me but I'm not selling them," says David.
David says the autographed, size 14 Kobe shoes will be going into a glass case.
"I just want to thank the people at Call Kurtis and Channel 13 and also Kobe's PR people and the people at Nike for making my dream come true... oh.. and also Kobe of course," says David.
We'd like to thank Kobe Bryant's people for stepping up and making it all happen for David.
