Call Kurtis: Free Pizza Flop
Gift Certificate Denied
ROSEVILLE (CBS13) ―
The serenity of Tom and Pat Dodaro's oasis has been disrupted by a little piece of paper.
"This is the wonderful certificate, very nice paper. Almost feels like money" Tom says as he flips the parchment around in his fingers.
It's a gift certificate for "Mark and Monica's pizza" in Granite Bay; 50-bucks.
Their grandson gave it to them for Christmas.
But when they tried to use it in July they found that the restaurant was "closed for business."
Not all was lost. There was another Mark and Monica's in Lincoln, just minutes away from the Dodaro home.
"We took it out of the trash," Toms says while laughing and remembering how he pulled it out of the kitchen can.
But Tom says the owner refused to honor it, telling them it was only good for the now-defunct Granite Bay location.
"He's mad at his partner still," referring to the owner's business partner, both of whom have gone their separate ways.
"It's amazing. It's only 50 dollars."
Now it's a matter of principle.
"How many of these are floatin' around out there that this guy's not honoring?"
Tom filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau; Mark and Monica's never responded.
So Tom called "another" news station for help, which couldn't get the job done.
Then he called us.
We inspected the certificate.
It does have the same logo used for all of Mark and Monica's locations, except in small print under the logo it reads Granite Bay.
But there is no disclaimer saying it was only good at that one location.
After our interview we stopped by the Lincoln location.
We spoke with two managers and asked them if they would honor the gift certificate.
We walked out with a validation signature showing they would.
We then delivered it to Tom.
"Are you guys the guys or what?" Tom says, meeting us at the front door, a smile wide across his face.
"The coolest thing I've ever seen. I mean, you know it was the principal of it. You guys came through like champs."
We spoke to owner, Mark, earlier today, and he told us that gift certificates from the Granite Bay store usually do state they're good for that location only.
This one didn't and that's where the confusion came in to play.
Mark says his restaurants will certainly honor that certificate.
