Do You Get The Gas You Pay For In Sacramento?
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
When you pump gas are you really getting what you pay for? CBS13, and the CBS Evening News teamed up to take a closer look at how gas pumps are inspected.
When you buy gas you have to trust the station is giving you every last drop of fuel you paid for.
"You just gotta hope it's right," said Dale Goodart, driver.
It's David Lazier's job to keep gas stations in Sacramento County honest.
"Iit goes into your fuel tank in your vehicle. You never see it. The only thing can judge it on is what the pump indicates and what your gas gauge looks like," said David.
Once a year, David's team from county weights and measures goes out and inspects each of the 385 stations, consisting of 8,000 meters.
"Most inspections are unannounced. We just show up within a 12 month period and say 'here we are'," said David.
If the pumps are cheating you they can be red tagged, otherwise they get a seal saying they passed.
California figures show 94 percent of pumps passed during 2006 and 2007. The numbers are even better in Sacramento County.
"Based on our data over the past year 98.6% of the time you're getting what you paid for," said David.
If you feel cheated, or see a sticker that's out of date call your county's weights and measures department. They rely on calls to help enforce the rules.
