Call Kurtis: Computer Confusion

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― A Dixon woman bought a computer at Sam's Club, but later returned it. When a bill kept showing up for the computer, she decided to call Kurtis.

Leticia Martinez loves children. She has four kids and seven grandkids. She doesn't speak fluent English so her daughter, Cristina, spoke to us.

"She bought computer for my brother's 15th birthday" says Cristina Cerna, Dixon resident.

Leticia went to the Sam's Club in Vacaville in June 2005. She paid $499 plus tax and insurance with her Sam's Club Discover credit card. Six months later, the screen stopped working.

"She took the computer back and they told us she was going to get credit for that" says Cristina.

They put the credit on a different credit card and she picked out another computer. It was more expensive so she charged the difference on the second card.

"When she got the first bill in January, they were charging for both computers" says Cristina.

Trying to fix the billing confusion, Leticia went back to Sam's Club and returned the second computer. She thought everything was settled but then collection notices started showing up.

"She says she feels really bad because her credit, it's affecting her" says Cristina.

Leticia had trouble financing a new car and refinancing her home.
No one at Sam's Club was able to help.

"They show up that the computer, it's returned, they don't understand why they're still charging her for that" explains Cristina.

So Cristina called me and we contacted Sam's Club. They refused to tell us what caused the confusion, saying they couldn't discuss their customers' credit history. Regardless, Sam's Club called Leticia to apologize for the bills and told her she now owes nothing.

"Now she's going to be able to refinance or do whatever she wants" says Cristina.

As for their computer...

"This is what we have right now" says Cristina.

Leticia ended up buying a computer system at a garage sale for 20 bucks.
