Mayor: NCAA Rejects 'Shabby' Arco Arena
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson says the NCAA won't be bringing its regional basketball March Madness playoffs to Sacramento because of the "shabby condition of Arco Arena".
The Mayor made the announcement on his
blog this morning calling the news "devastating" and "embarrassing". The NCAA tournament has been held at Arco four times since 1994 and brought big money to the area.
And the mayor isn't blaming the NCAA. "It's not the NCAA's fault. And I'm not surprised by the rejection. I knew this day would come. Any sports fan who has visited Arco Arena lately should have seen it coming," Mayor Johnson said in his blog post.
Johnson goes on to say he is now going to take the lead on getting a new arena built saying "I can tell you I won't be standing by watching other promoters reject Arco Arena. I won't wait for the question, "Who's next to go?
The arena issue needs the Mayor's leadership. And that's what it's going to get."
Arco Arena was built back in 1988 for $40 million. It seats 17,317 and has 30 luxury suites.
