Webber Calls Sacramento A "Cow-Town" On ESPN Radio
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Former Sacramento Kings player Chris Webber, called the capitol city a "cow-town" during an interview on ESPN.
He's certainly not the first to make the reference, and it seemed to come in something of a self-deprecating form, but the timing was interesting, coming a day after his Center Court restaurant closed its doors.
Was the king of Kings, Chris Webber, being a joker on the radio? He was talking on the subject of Lebron James going to a team in a bigger city.
But, how could Chris Webber say that? He's certainly not the first sports figure to say it -- or even the first local hero.
Mayor Johnson jokingly made the widely-known reference on Thursday, and his former teammate, Charles Barkley, said it with a little less jest a few years ago. Phil Jackson also said it during the strong rivalry days. Even a local hero, Dustin Pedroia, referred to his hometown Woodland in the same unflattering light earlier this year.
When Webber was traded to Sacramento, he was less happy about it, but grew to be widely welcomed by the fans. He played six and half seasons for the Kings, and just had his jersey retired by the team in February.
