New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora has serious ligament damage in his left knee and likely will miss the season, a person familiar with the injury results said.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because an announcement had not yet been made by the Super Bowl champion Giants. An MRI on Sunday revealed the injury.
Umenyiora was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the New York Jets, and early indications were that there was no ligament damage.
Umenyiora started all 16 games last season and had 52 tackles and a team-high 13 sacks. He added seven tackles in the Giants' playoff run to the Super Bowl.
