Police Chase Man On Tank Rampage, Down Under
(CBS13)
An Australian man went on a rampage with a stolen armored personal carrier on Saturday, destroying several mobile phone towers and an electricity substation before he was arrested by police.
Police spotted the man in the outer western suburb of Minchinbury at about 2:00 on Saturday morning.
The 45-year-old man, whose identity was not immediately released, led officers on a 90-minute chase as he crashed the privately owned vehicle into mobile phone towers and telecommunications buildings across six western Sydney suburbs.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle stalled as it was being driven toward another mobile phone tower, New South Wales state police said in a statement.
"I ran out there and I seen the tank," eyewitness Mal Taufoou said.
"It was damaging the transmission container. But it took about 15 or 20 minutes. Just in and out, in and out and it damaged the whole lot, the fence. And just reversed and heading north," he added.
Police charged the man with predatory driving, possession of a prohibited drug, use of a weapon to avoid apprehension, driving in a dangerous manner and other crimes.
He was ordered to appear in Parramatta Bail Court later on Saturday.
