Murder Suspect Fatally Shot After Chase Near L.A.
CARSON, Calif. (AP) ―
A murder suspect was shot Thursday after leading law enforcement on a wild Southern California freeway chase during the morning commuter rush.
The suspect was killed.
Torrance police began chasing a black Nissan Maxima just after eight a.m. The pursuit continued across the Vincent Thomas Bridge and onto the Long Beach and San Diego freeways before the suspect's car was struck by a police car and it spun to a stop at the San Diego and Harbor freeways.
Torrance police report a man was killed Wednesday night during a domestic disturbance.
The chase by at least ten squad cars from the Torrance Police Department and the California Highway Patrol reached speeds up to 90 miles an hour. The Maxima swerved in and out of traffic, narrowly missing vehicles at it navigated clogged freeway lanes.
The Maxima was struck from behind by a police cruiser in what is known as a PIT maneuver. Then, it spun around and stopped with a police car pinning the nose of the vehicle. A short time later, a SWAT team truck pinned it from behind.
There was weapons fire from the SWAT truck and police moved in and broke the Maxima windows. Police are investigating whether the suspect was killed by police fire or his own weapon.
