UK Papers: Clinton To Accept Role In Obama Cabinet

Sen. Hillary Clinton is poised to accept the position of secretary of state in President-elect Barack Obama's White House administration, two British papers reported Tuesday, citing unnamed Washington sources.
"Washington sources confirmed last night" that Obama's former Democratic rival for the presidency would accept the offer, reports the Daily Mail.
The Guardian points to the Obama transition team's current vetting of Bill Clinton's finances as a sure sign of plans to move ahead with the offer. Democrats do not believe that the vetting is likely to be a problem, the Guardian reports.
Previous reports indicated that Obama had also been considering another primary election rival for secretary of state -- New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson.
Democratic officials said Obama met with Richardson Friday in Chicago, a day after meeting with Clinton.
Richardson
is the governor of New Mexico and has an extensive foreign policy
resume. He was President Clinton's ambassador to the United Nations and
has conducted freelance diplomacy as governor in such hot spots as
Sudan and North Korea.
Obama was silent and out of sight in
Chicago on Friday, one day after quietly meeting with Clinton at his headquarters
there. She addressed a transit conference last week in New York and said
emphatically, "I'm not going to speculate or address anything about the
president-elect's incoming administration, and I'm going to respect his
process."
Obama also reached out to Republican Sen. John
McCain, hoping to make an ally of the man he defeated for the
presidency only last week. Obama met with McCain on Monday.
McCain's meeting with Obama was less furtive, and aides to both men
said no Cabinet post is envisioned for the Arizona senator. Obama has
said he plans to invite at least one Republican to join his Cabinet.
