Buy It And Try It: Tater Mitts

The Tater Mitts are supposed to peel potatoes in eight seconds. Lets see if they work.
Loaves and Fishes is an oasis for Sacramento's homeless and the hungry.
"This is one of the largest places for homeless people to get a good, hot meal," says Sister Libby Fernandez, the Loaves and Fishes Executive Director.
Sister Libby says they serve, on average, 650 people a day, seven days a week.
And they know potatoes.
Chef Dawna Barkes normally uses the good old fashioned potato peeler, which can mean some cuts and nicks and cramped fingers.
Not today.
It's a big claim, but the Tater Mitts say it'll peel a potato in just seconds. It appears there are little blue rocks attached to the rubber gloves. The bumpy surface peels the potato.
So let's get started. Something the infomercial doesn't say -- you have to cook the potatoes first.
Chef Donna tries it out. You have to vigorously rub the potato under cold water.
A few seconds later: "Done." The stopwatch says 21.9 seconds.
It's not eight seconds, but 21. However, the potato is peeled!
Chef Dawna thinks that with practice, "it'll go a little quicker."
Her conclusion? Two thumbs up.
