Buy It And Try It: Awesome Auger

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― The Awesome Auger claims to take the hard work out of yard work. Let's see if it works.

The commercial says it'll dig holes for plants, help remove dead trees, bushes, roots and stumps, even blast through rock-hard clay. We took it to a guy who knows something about yard work: Michael Hoover, a landscaper of 30 years.

The Auger feels like a durable piece of metal with a chiseled tip. You attach it to any drill -- they offered a cordless drill for free -- just pay the $39.95 shipping and processing.

"That's pretty powerful," Hoover said.

Michael starts easy with some soft soil: "It would dig a hole real easy to put a plant in."

He digs several holes in seconds. "It does make it quick, it does work fast," he said.

He tried it out on some roots of small trees, and finds that it takes a little work, but less than a minute later, the roots wrapped around the Auger and came right out.

Michael noticed the battery on the supplied cordless drill was already weakening, so he switched the Awesome Auger to his personal industrial drill and tries it on some rocky, hard soil.

It seems to dig right through, so how's our blade doing on hard dirt?

"Actually, the blades held up pretty good," Michael said.

Michael tried it on the stump of a small tree, and works at it for a while, but can't get the tree out.

He's not a fan of it pulling out stumps, and says it's only as strong as the drill.

But as for the auger itself?

"I've been a landscaper for 30 years, and I'm pretty impressed with it," Michael said. "I might get one."

I paid $19.95 and bought the Awesome Auger at BuyTheAuger.com. The free drill costs $39.95 for shipping and processing.
