Loretto High School To Close In June
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ―
Loretto High School, a private Catholic school in Sacramento, will close permanently at the end of this school year after more than 50 years of educating girls.
In a press release issued this morning, the school administrators said declining enrollment at the all-girls school is forcing them to close their doors. According to the release, enrollment has dwindled to just 389 students from 560 just three years ago.
The Institute of The Blessed Virgin Mary Provincial which runs Loretto says the worsening economy combined with competition from other schools and higher operating costs all contributed to the decision.
The current tuition at Loretto High School, according to the website, is $11,275. That does not include books, school uniforms, sports and class fees.
Loretto president, Sister Helen Timothy, said she and her staff are reaching out to surrounding Catholic schools on behalf of students, and students who were applying to Loretto. 172 seniors are expected to graduate from Loretto in June leaving 262 students who need to find other schools.
"Our administration's first priority is to minimize the disruption in the lives of our current students, prospective students and their families. To facilitate a smooth transition in changing schools, other Catholic school administrators have agreed to accommodate as many students as possible in time for the next school year," Timothy said.
Loretto was founded in 1955.
